Finding a decent birthday present for a very generous sibling when we are all OAPs is not straightforward especially at a fair cost. However youngest sister who often treats siblings to Wimbledon Tennis had never been to a football match so I purchased tickets weeks previously for her, youngest brother and myself (oldest brother was unable to come that day).
In fact although the match had been a sell out for weeks I was able to buy three tickets in the front row.
Given that AFC Wimbledon who were playing Port Vale, lost the match 2-0 I initially decided not to do a blog post about that game. Nonetheless, the Dons managed to secure a place in the promotion play offs by winning 0-1 away to Grimsby Town yesterday, so going ahead with this blog post seemed apt after all. Port Vale who lost their final match arestill automatically promoted to Division 1.
As does the picture below, taken before the match began of the three of us attending
All credit to Part Vale and their fans though. Their fans cheered and roared from the away end probably at least partially, explaining why the total crowd attendance was a record for the Dons. For similar reasons the single deck bus to the ground was too packed to pick up many more passengers after I had embarked.I stood next to a Port Vale supporter on the bus to the ground. He told me of the difficulties he had had in attending, for example missing a train connection but was in good spirits, which were probably hugely improved for him by the result.
Though the crowd was noisy there was no violence Also there were many families, women and children spectators - thankfully a far cry from some childhood trips with my late father to watch Chelsea. Further in my father's day one had to stand whereas now there are seats for everyone.
In any event the three of us walked back to Wimbledon after a great afternoon.
