A Man for All Seasons

Youngest sister kindly treated mrs maytrees and I on Friday this week, to a very enjoyable performance of A Man for All Seasons at The Harold Pinter Theatre in London.

 One review states:

A Man For All Seasons starring Martin Shaw Written by Robert Bolt Directed by Jonathan Church. The greatest, most powerful and dangerous figures who shaped English history are brought vividly to life in Robert Bolt's award-winning play.

Martin Shaw we all knew well for his excellent performances in TV's Judge John Deed though  I recall he also starred in another rather older TV series entitled The Professionals.

The recent  BBC TV series entitled Wolf Hall was thought by youngest sister as being slightly better though in my view one cannot really compare a series of  performances on TV watched at home with a single performance in a well attended London West End Theatre. The atmosphere in the latter can be electric especially if as was in our case, the the theatre is crowded.

However a report  about the then (November 2024) forthcoming  TV series reads:

The trailer shows Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance) as he navigates the court of King Henry VIII (Damian Lewis), encountering Henry’s new wife, Jane Seymour (Kate Phillips), his daughter Lady Mary (Lilit Lesser), Rafe Sadler (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Gregory Cromwell (Charlie Rowe), Thomas Wriostheley (Harry Melling), Dorothea (Hannah Khalique-Brown) and Sir Geoffrey Pole (Pip Carter), with flashbacks of Cardinal Wolsey (Jonathan Pryce).

I must admit to enjoying Wolf Hall but as indicated above, nothing beats watching a production in the atmosphere within a crowded London Theatre.
