Sister in law suggested to mrs maytrees that we went to Sotheby's yesterday to look at the Freddie Mercury exhibition that had just opened, with Sotheby's holding the auction itself later, in October. Unlike mrs maytrees and sister in law, his music does not appeal to me.
The auction is occurring as the person to whom Freddie Mercury left his estate, now apparently feels too old to care for all the items. Unlike some other collections, there is no reason that I can see to be disappointed at the splitting up of Freddie Mercury's possessions, the auction will of course cause.
Despite Freddie Mercury's music not particularly appealing to me, I was persuaded to attend with the others.
I believe there is a connection between Sotheby's and Freddie Mercury though I am not sure what.
Once there I was pleased to attend, not least because I had never previously attended at Sotheby's and the exhibition itself was well presented and most interesting. Freddie Mercury appears to have had a fascination for collecting Japanese art. However his grand piano was most attractive. Bohemian Rhapsody by his group Queen was being played as we looked at some of the exhibits.
The juke box, above right was brilliant in all senses of the word. The old fashioned red telephone, above left is probably the only exhibit which sister in law and her husband (my younger brother) will be able to afford.
The free admission to Sotheby's and the helpfulness of their staff, made the venue and its well ordered setting better than many museums.
