Last Saturday youngest sister kindly treated mrs maytrees and myself to a great performance of the Cold War at the Almeida Theatre Highbury and Islington, which venue none of us had previously visited.
The theatre was packed without a single available seat though fortunately, our tickets had been purchased well in advance. I believe Saturday's was the final performance at the Almeida, of this unusual Polish play. The theatre is very small so much so that our seats had been bumped up for no extra cost, to seats nearer the stage so that we could sit together
We had lunch in the Almeida's restaurant before the 2pm performance commenced; mine was a great risotto, followed by an olive oil chocolate glace, which were delicious.
The theatre being so small, we all had a terrific view of the stage. The play concerned a Polish love story during the Soviet occupation of the country after WWII.
The story I found difficult to follow but the singing and dancing throughout the performance were spellbinding, so much so that the two hours forty minutes of the performance including a twenty minute interval, sped by.
The journey home from Highbury and Islington tube station took almost exactly only one hour so visiting the Almeida Theatre again will be straightforward.
