Having thought hard and long before the USA election, my personal preference had been for Vice President Kamala Harris to be the victor. Trump after all had been convicted of at least one crime, found wanting in civil law suits and had paid off women who claimed to have been assaulted by him.
In this country,, the BBC had spent months seeking the removal of Boris Johnson who had been cautioned by the police for attending a drinks party during the Covid-19 lock down law, enacted by Parliament.
The BBC too supported Harris though to me, the BBC invariably appears to hold an arm chair liberal viewpoint.
Even with the benefit of hindsight, Boris Johnson's police caution for attending a drinks party seems trivial especially when compared with Donald Trump's transgressions yet Donald Trump was the clear winner.
Years ago the private lives of politicians in the UK were grounds for their removal from office or non-election. More recently the behaviour in politicians' private lives has again in the UK, largely become irrelevant.
Taking Boris Johnson as a recent example, his marital issues and apparent fatherhood outside of marriage were no bar to his being elected by popular vote and becoming Prime Minister, though I wonder what would have become of John Major had the media been aware of his dalliance outside of marriage at the time of his party's election to power.
Most of the media had expected Kamala Harris to win yet the American public today, seems largely unconcerned by Trump's records in the law courts. Their concerns were and are more about employment, immigration and the cost of living. Thus the media's expectations were thwarted.
After Trump's success my older brother took the view that Trump was the better of the two USA presidential candidates. Upon reflection, older brother may be right.
Last time in presidential office, President Trump largely maintained peace in the world by not engaging in any major wars and I wonder therefore if he will secure peace in Ukraine, Gaza, Israel and Lebanon to name but a few of the world's hot spots. If so we will all be better off for that almost regardless of the effects of many of his other policies.
