The Tempest in Cannizaro Park Wimbledon Common

Not having been to the theatre  or seen a play performed live since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, going last night, with maytrees min, her boyfriend and mrs maytrees to see Shakespeare's "The Tempest" at Cannizaro near The Common was a refreshing treat. "Refreshing"  being the correct word, not least because hurricane storm Evert was still making itself felt.

The visit to Cannizaro was preceded by supper at the nearby Hand in Hand pub on the Common though we had booked a table inside in view of the (accurate) weather forecast. The Hand in Hand has been vastly improved and extended since my previous visit there a year or so back with older brother after a long cycle ride.

A good supper was enjoyed by the four of us, after which we walked to Mayhem Theatre Company's stage setting at the far end of Cannizaro.

The production was a sell out. There was only a short run from Wednesday to Saturday this week with Wednesday's opening performance, ironically, being cancelled because of  the tempest rain caused by Storm Evert. Thankfully there was no rain last night but still a strong wind which added to the atmosphere of the play though we were all pleased to have brought  coats with us.

The play is about magic, love and forgiveness and is set on an island off Italy where Prospero who had been The Duke of Milan, lived with his beautiful daughter, Miranda and a wild man called Caliban.  Other characters are shipwrecked onto the island where they cannot for a while, escape. The play seems to concern justice, our understanding of it and how we all cope with it.

The performance began when conditions were still bright but at the interval night had drawn in and floodlights were lit, just before which I heard a (natural) owl hoot.

An excellent night and resumption at last, of theatre going.
