London Transport Museum Depot

Youngest sister kindly bought tickets for herself, my older brother and I to visit the  working depot in Acton where old London Transport  trains, buses and trolley buses, are restored for public viewing at the museum in central London. Apparently the ability to wander the site at will is limited to three times a year so the tickets were hard to come by.

The day proved rather more interesting than we had expected. There was a small shop at which I bought a Wimbledon Tennis bag:

The displays were interesting to view. There was a single Network Rail coach from the Waterloo to Bank line which line has more recently been brought under Transport for London control. I was informed that this  coach had been allowed to rust outside the Transport museum in York until it was brought down to London for restoration:

I recall using a far older green version  from Waterloo,  under pre denationalisation British Railways days. That version even had a first class section for those who travelled first class on the commute by long distance trains (also coloured green at the time).

My brother and I were amused by seeing an old trolley bus numbered 657 one of which I used to take to primary school over 60 years ago. Eight year olds seemed to be able to travel more freely and safely then than they do now though the form of transport was probably rather less safe:

The number of the trolley bus is still correct though its route list was for another line.

There were  a number of  interesting carriages some of which went back to the 1920s:

Then there was an old    bus  which would have been horse drawn and several other old vehicles:

Overall,  we all thought trip to Acton to have been well worth while but agreed with older brother's view, that an enterprising individual could have set up a profitable stall selling decent  drinks and meals rather than the  single rather small stand that was not worth attending.

The staff both within and without the museum, were mainly volunteers and were both knowledgeable and very helpful.

An enjoyable day.

For me whilst at school, Charles Dickens novels were not attractive. One does in my view, need to be an adult of say at least 25 years to be...
