2024

Next year will surely be more fulfilling for the world than 2023. Some of my less significant predictions are set out on the preceding  blog post but other thoughts appear below.

Certainly the maytrees' family have much to look forward to in 2024 with mrs maytrees and I starting off with  new years day drinks and laughter with old friends Lynette and David.

Then maytrees min and her new husband will take their delayed honeymoon to Sri Lanka and The Maldives. In summer that year maytrees max expects to be married to his fiancee on Jersey CI.

But family happenings apart, hopefully 2024 will be far better for mankind and the world than 2023 has been. The wars in Ukraine, Israel and Gaza of course come to mind as 2023 tragedies but starvation in some third countries with fighting in others are really as bad as the more  tragic fighting there but perhaps mankind will row back at least a little, from these wars next year. The old Sudan for example is larger than much of Europe, has reserves of minerals and oil yet has spent so much time in vicious fighting.

The USA seems unable at present  in 2023, to put forward presidential candidates who are under retirement age;  many other democratic countries have elected this year, leaders who are too right wing for me, because of their electorates' concerns about illegal immigration.

The UK  for 2024 at least appears relatively immune to such electoral concern given that both main parties are only slightly left of centre.

The Catholic Church  under Pope Francis, has been a star in 2023 and long may this continue. Gay  couples may be blessed and divorced persons may receive Holy Communion at mass. Women priests should follow soon though as is not unusual many find the modernisation of the Church, difficult to accept; it was the same years ago after Vatican II.

The West gave up in Afghanistan. Sadly that country is now one in which women seem to be second class citizens or much worse. Providing aid there too is difficult as even charity aid workers who are female, seem to be obstructed if not banned.

Overall though. I expect more man made crises will be, if not resolved at least stayed, during 2024.
