The Amtrack to Washington gives time for initial thoughts about NY.
A dynamic place. For the tourist like yours truly exhilarating. Brooklyn Bridge, The High Line disused railway line walk, free ferry to Staten Island, view of Statue of Liberty from the ferry, Manhattan, run around Central Park, the snow and then of course after a great lunch with maytrees min who is working in the USA for a few months, some shopping and the Empire State Building.
The NY subway is cheap and frequent But the NY subway is also worn and dirty
A vibrant city with people who are very friendly but the gap between rich and poor is perhaps even wider than in London eg subway passengers mostly seemed poorer.
