Workers or Free

The ancient Egyptian leaders clearly regarded most  people as their workers; for example hundreds of  people must have spent years building  the pyramids and beautifully ornate tombs in that land. See for example Egyptian ancient monuments. That the builders were workers rather than slaves, seems likely as they were paid bread and beer money.

Ancient Romans in England probably enlisted slave labour but they also seem to have paid some, partly at least, in salt.

Vladimir Putin is  acting atrociously and given that we are in C21 rather than thousands of years ago, he is surely a war criminal? Many of his soldiers appear to be conscripts any pay to whom is unclear.

Years ago when the then USSR was just beginning to emerge from WWII and the cold war, mrs maytrees and I visited Leningrad now called St Petersburg see page 162 of  The Wandering Soul:

The Wandering Soul

Maytrees mi whilst a student a few years back went by train from the then international station at London Waterloo all the way to Eastern China travelling a week through Russia on the train.

I very much doubt if anyone could safely attempt any such journeys today even if they wished to, which seems doubtful as most people  seem to be travelling in the opposite direction including young Russians avoiding the compulsory draft, much as many Americans did during the Vietnam war although Jimmy Carter pardoned the latter in 1977. Most now appreciate that many draft dodgers  then were both right and brave.

The appalling atrocities being committed in the Ukraine under Putin's orders will surely end with the current Russian leader at least emasculated?

I hope so and meanwhile Ukraine and its brave people  need assistance and prayers.
